Originally by: Mistress Jeanette It comes down to your definition of good PVP I think.
If you consider PVP ganking noobs or industrial/mining ships then IMO you've won the fight by simply being the one in the combat ship. The reason you win or have any success at all is because your target is not in a ship capable of putting up a fight. Add to that the fact he's not looking for one. Kinda like an adult beating up kid.
If you win because you're in a gang/fleet well chances are the reason you were successful is again the situation fixes the odds in your favor, i.e. you got help. (to the dude that claimed to get a kill without tackling and when asked how, he says my gang had a tackle...well then A) you didn't kill him without a tackle and B) YOU didn't kill him, you helped KILL him). This is like 5 people beating up on 1 person. Most low SP kills fall in this category.
Finally, those that consider good PVP a somewhat level playing field, in other words two similarly sized fleets or 1 vs 1, in these cases does having less SP hurt you. I think the OP can answer that.
For me the answer is absolutely, YES!
The only time SP does not help you win/loose a fight is when the odds are already stacked in your favor as discribed above.
This kind of thinking is very similar to my mindset. I think there really needs to be an important distinction when it comes to "PvP" and "Ganking".
I myself don't pretend to have enormous experience in PvP combat and however I have been "ganked" much more than I have PvP'ed.
For me, I believe PvP to be:
Both (1v1), or all (multiple targets), engage each other with the intention of destroying the other target. The reasons for the engagement will vary from, revenge to just for fun.
However, both parties are in ships fit for the purpose of PvP or are engaged in actions centered around pvp.
Example: During a mining OP I was being harassed by a canflipper. I subsenquently decided to engage the canflipper with my Battlecruiser. I did not win the fight, BUT I consider this to be ACTUAL pvp because the fight was consensual and the intentions behind both pilots were to fight each other.
What I don't consider to be PvP are actions like killing a defensless target without a "valid" PvP reason. A Rifter killing a miner in low sec is NOT PvP. A rifter getting the jump on a low sec / null sec ratter is NOT pvp. This is ganking, which isn't wrong. However this is not actual player vs player combat.
Now however a Rifter attacking and killing a hauler that is carrying supplies to an enemy? I would consider this to be PvP.
I'm not going to sit here and consider all the different scenarios and list them for you however I will say this.
It does take more SP to be competive in REAL PvP then it does to be a GANKER. And most low SP pvp videos will show you that. ...
